How do I change my laptop settings?

Basically, I need to defrag my laptop over night while I sleep. However, I tried this a while back and when I left the laptop unattended for about 30 minutes (without the lid being close) it looked like it had turned off and went into sleep mode and I wasn't sure if the defragmentation was continuing or not but the fans had turned off when this happen and there was no sound. And whenever I shut the lid, it automatically goes into sleep mode but I know how to change these settings. Basically, I need to leave it on all night, and for it not to turn off or go into sleep mode. I want the screensaver to stay on throughout the night but I don't want my laptop stopping the defragmentation when left attended for ages. Any help? Thanks. How do I change my laptop settings?

Right click on a blank part of the screen (not on an icon) Properties / Screen Saver scroll to None / Power at Turn off monitor scroll to NEVER / turn off hard disks scroll to NEVER / System Standby NEVER. Then apply. Your PC will NEVER do anything without you knowing about it or to say behind your back.

PS. If you want anything back like Screen Saver or whatever just adjust it to please yourself.

How do i get a screen saver?

In win xo , my screensaver is only able to do a slide show, how is it possible to change it to just stick on one photo%26gt;How do i get a screen saver?
if you only want the one pic for your screensaver, empty your ';my pics'; folder andjust put one in thereHow do i get a screen saver?
You don't want it to just stick on 1 photo. The whole point of a screensaver is to keep things moving, so your screen doesn't freeze up.
a) The idea of a screensaver is that the images are changed, so that the screen doesn't get overburdened by the same image, same colors (it does matter, I have seen icons burned through on the surface of a monitor). And the images change slowly, so that the processor, disc, and video card are not overburdened.

b) I think the slideshow contains the images located in the ';My Pictures'; folder (sorry, I am not on XP right now, so I cannot check, but I am pretty sure) - if you move your pictures to another folder and leave just one picture there, that might work.
if u want 1 pic only...thn y waste memory of ur pc on screen saver....go n past this pic as wallpaper....n enjoy the pic

Summary

Your desktop picture is the most high profile item on your computer. Likewise, your screen saver is the most high profile item when you're not. And like the desktop picture, you can change the default screen saver, use your own slideshow creation, or use a third-party screen saver.

Products Affected

Mac OS

Change Your Screen Saver

To swap your current screen saver for another one:

Mac OS X contains several preinstalled screen savers.

From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences to open the System Preferences window.

Click the Desktop %26amp; Screen Saver button to display its preferences.

Click the Screen Saver tab to display just the Screen Saver preferences. All installed screen savers appear in the left pane. The right pane displays a preview of the selected screen saver.

Click one of the Screen Saver items in the left pane to select it for use.

If you'd like, click Test to see what the screen saver will look like in use.

To create a slideshow screen saver, do one of the following:

By selecting Library, your Mac will automatically create a slideshow screen saver made from your iPhoto pictures.

In the Screen Saver preferences window, select Library or one of the two choices below it to turn your iPhoto images into a slideshow screen saver.

In the Screen Saver preferences window, select Pictures Folder to display the images in it, or select Choose Folder, navigate to and select a folder that contains images in the resulting dialog, then click Choose to put it in use.

To add a third-party screen saver:

Once you install a third-party screen saver, either through an installer or manually,

you can select it just like you would with the preinstalled ones.

If the screen saver doesn't have an installer to place the file in the right folder, locate the .saver file in the package.

Drag the file into the Screen Savers folder, which is in the Library folder at the root of your hard disk ~/Library/Screen Savers.

Follow the steps in ';swap your current screen saver for another one,'; above, to select the third-party screen saver.

Customize Your Screen Saver

Now that you've outfitted your Mac with a new screen saver, you can further customize its settings. Here are some of the things you can do in the Screen Saver preferences window.

Click Options to view the selected screen saver's user-configurable display settings and adjust them to your liking. These settings will vary screen saver to screen saver.

Move the ';Start screen saver'; slider left or right to change the time, in minutes, at which the screen saver begins to play.

If you'd like the ability to start the screen saver manually, click Hot Corners. In the resulting dialog, choose Start Screen Saver from any of the four corner pop-up menus and click OK. The screen saver will start when you move your arrow to your chosen screen corner.

If you're the adventurous type, select ';Use random screen saver,'; and your Mac will automatically select a screen saver when it goes into screen saver mode.

Spyware is computer software that is installed surreptitiously on a personal computer to intercept or take partial control over the user's interaction with the computer, without the user's informed consent.

While the term spyware suggests software that secretly monitors the user's behavior, the functions of spyware extend well beyond simple monitoring. Spyware programs can collect various types of personal information, such as Internet surfing habit, sites that have been visited, but can also interfere with user control of the computer in other ways, such as installing additional software, redirecting Web browser activity, accessing websites blindly that will cause more harmful viruses, or diverting advertising revenue to a third party. Spyware can even change computer settings, resulting in slow connection speeds, different home pages, and loss of Internet or other programs. In an attempt to increase the understanding of spyware, a more formal classification of its included software types is captured under the term privacy-invasive software.

In response to the emergence of spyware, a small industry has sprung up dealing in anti-spyware software. Running anti-spyware software has become a widely recognized element of computer security best practices for Microsoft Windows desktop computers. A number of jurisdictions have passed anti-spyware laws, which usually target any software that is surreptitiously installed to control a user's computer

    -=Anti-spyware programs=-

Lavasoft's Ad-Aware 2008Many programmers and some commercial firms have released products designed to remove or block spyware. Steve Gibson's OptOut pioneered a growing category. Programs such as Lavasoft's Ad-Aware SE (free scans for non-commercial users, must pay for other features) and Patrick Kolla's Spybot - Search %26amp; Destroy (all features free for non-commercial use) rapidly gained popularity as effective tools to remove, and in some cases intercept, spyware programs. More recently Microsoft acquired the GIANT AntiSpyware software, rebranding it as Windows AntiSpyware beta and releasing it as a free download for Genuine Windows XP and Windows 2003 users. In 2006, Microsoft renamed the beta software to Windows Defender (free), and it was released as a free download in October 2006 and is included as standard with Windows Vista. Other well-known commercial anti-spyware products include:

PC Tools's Spyware Doctor (free scans but you have to pay to remove the spyware)

Sunbelt Software's Counterspy (15-day free trial)

    Trend Micro's HijackThis (free)

Webroot Software's Spy Sweeper (free version does not remove spyware)

ParetoLogic's Anti-Spyware and XoftSpy SE (free version does not remove spyware)

Major anti-virus firms such as Symantec, McAfee and Sophos have come later to the table, adding anti-spyware features to their existing anti-virus products. Early on, anti-virus firms expressed reluctance to add anti-spyware functions, citing lawsuits brought by spyware authors against the authors of web sites and programs which described their products as ';spyware';. However, recent versions of these major firms' home and business anti-virus products do include anti-spyware functions, albeit treated differently from viruses. Symantec Anti-Virus, for instance, categorizes spyware programs as ';extended threats'; and now offers real-time protection from them (as it does for viruses).

Recently, the anti-virus company Grisoft, creator of AVG Anti-Virus, acquired anti-spyware firm Ewido Networks, re-labeling their Ewido anti-spyware program as AVG Anti-Spyware Professional Edition. AVG also used this product to add an integrated anti-spyware solution to some versions of the AVG Anti-Virus family of products, plus made a freeware AVG Anti-Spyware Free Edition available for private and non-commercial use. This shows a trend by anti virus companies to launch a dedicated solution to spyware and malware. Zone Labs, creator of Zone Alarm firewall have also released an anti-spyware program.

    -=Fake anti-spyware programs=-

See also: List of fake anti-spyware programs

    See also: Rogue software

Malicious programmers have released a large number of fake anti-spyware programs, and widely distributed Web banner ads now spuriously warn users that their computers have been infected with spyware, directing them to purchase programs which do not actually remove spyware攐r worse, may add more spyware of their own.[44][45]

The recent proliferation of fake or spoofed antivirus products has occasioned some concern. Such products often bill themselves as antispyware, antivirus, or registry cleaners, and sometimes feature popups prompting users to install them. This software is called rogue software.

It recommended that users do not install any freeware claiming to be anti-spyware unless it is verified to be legitimate. Some known offenders include:

Getting the sound of thunder and rain off my PC?

For awhile now on our family pc there is a sudden thunderclap audio noise and I do not know how it got there and I cannot find the program to turn it off or change it. I looked at the control panel under volume and sound manager. I do not even know why it goes off. This is not a malfunction of the speakers as someone suggested. It must be an theme option for sound but I cannot find it. It is almost like an audio version of a screensaver and comes and goes periodically and only lasts for a few seconds.Getting the sound of thunder and rain off my PC?
check no one has changed the computer sounds.

start %26gt; control panel %26gt; sounds and audio devices %26gt; sounds tab.

it is here you will find a scroll down list of all the sounds the computer will make for various functions.

you can just delete it if you find it in there.

or change it to what you want it to be.
